Living a Lush Life

I attended the BBW Network 2006 10th Anniversary Bash July 25th through the 30th and it was absolutely stupendous! If you know Joanne and Darwin then you know the amount of work and love they pour into the event. This was my first Vegas Bash and I will certainly go again. Please visit their website (www.BBWnetwork.com) and in particular, visit the message boards. You will find an extraordinary group of very supportive people.

This was the biggest event yet for them and I am hearing reports of over 1200 people in attendance throughout the week. I was continuously amazed and inspired by the people I met and so happy to be greated enthusiastically and warmly everywhere I went. Thank you!

During the Bash there I met the lovely and talented Kira Moffo (www.TheBBWworld.com) and was immediately swept up in the excitement about her documentary project. Kira has been interviewing large women, large men and their admirers for a documentary that she will be bringing to the Sundance Film Festival. Please visit her website and read her blog for more information about this important project.

One night Kira invited several of us to a round table conversation about being women who weren’t thin, who did not see ourselves represented in the media in positive ways, and what our lives were like. I won’t mention names (unless I hear from you and you give me permission) but I will say that I felt truly honored to share such an insightful night of meaningful girl talk with a group of intelligent, supportive, eloquent women. I count you all as very special friends and I look forward to seeing you all again.

Every night there was dancing by the pool, costume themed parties in the ballroom, and people flirting, talking, and laughing. I was particularly inspired watching the fashion show. To see so many beautiful large size women, all strutting in their designer clothes was a personally empowering experience.

The formal night was magnificent and if the great dinner wasn’t enough, the magnificent desert area, the beautiful women in beautiful gowns, handsome men in tuxedos, but then to see Broadway Star, Kim Yarbrough perform just for us was really a special treat. She is gorgrous, stylish, and very very talented.

My friend Stephie, who traveled to Las Vegas from Iowa, and I went to see the Cirque De Soleil show "Ka" at their permanent home at  the MGM Grand and we were extremely impressed. Being from New York City I am always prepared to be disappointed with theater (the Big Apple breeds snobs – what can I tell you?) but the show was out of this world. Truly one of the best nights of theater I have ever experienced. By the way, as a size 16-18, I can tell you that the seats were very comfortable for me, but a largerperson might find the seats were a little snug. The entire theater is a part of the set design so I felt like I was inside the show.  They were generously padded though, which was very nice. Also, the seats had speakers in the headrest, which made the theatrical experience even more personal. You might want to ask for an aisle seat.

Steph, Miss Kira and myself also went to the Carrot Top performance at the Luxor. Yes, I said it—Carrot Top.  We wanted to see an evening of comedy and in particular I wanted to tell you about the material.  After all, if you are in Las Vegas then you might want to see some shows. I can tell you that while there were the types of "blue" jokes that I would expect from an evening of comedy in Las Vegas it really wasn’t that shocking.  Also, there really wasn’t anything mean or insulting in his entire act. I have to say the three of us were more than suprised by how funny he was.  I can actually recommend seeing his show.  Yes, that’s right. I am telling you to spend some money to see Carrot Top.  As with Ka, you will probably want an aisle seat as the seats in the theater are a bit snug.

To everyone I personally connected with – thank you for the fun times, the wonderful conversations, and our new friendships. I thank you for welcoming me to join your group when you were visiting with your friends. I know that when you attend an event like the Bash it is an opportunity to visit with those people whom you only see once a year. I also very much appreciate your enthusiasm about this site. It was so much fun giving out T-shirts and tote bags and next year I’ll do it again!

In particular I want to thank my new friend (you know who you are) with the big heart, the gypsy soul, and the rental car – thank you for taking us to WalMart!

Thank you BBW Network for a wonderful week of fun. The parties were hopping, the swimsuits were dazzling (Big Love to Ro) and the suportive community was life changing. I can’t wait to see you all again next year.

I’m disappointed that I couldn’t make the Las Vegas event, but I’ll look forward to being there next year and hopefully to meeting you in person!
